Christmas.2001.Singapore

Touchdown! I mean, landed on Ubin Island.

From the dock, we went straight to the information booth and asked for a map of the island.

The best way to explore the island is by cycling.  Craig opted for the mountain bike while Mama and I decided on granny bikes.

Pulau Ubin is beautifully rustic.  The weather was perfect as it slightly drizzled, cooling the day.  Craig tries to jump off one of the few wooden bridges we crossed.

Craig could not have enough of my Keds shoes, which I borrowed from my mother, having neglected to bring my own sports shoes.

Here we rest in a hut before tackling a steep slope.

Mama was too tired to ride to the top, so it was only Craig and I who chanced upon an eerie Chinese cemetery.

Far from the cycling path, we braved a gravel road and were rewarded with this view.

Unfortunately, this area was quite polluted with plastic and other garbage.  Hopefully Singapore will see to it that this island keeps clean.

Craig @ Noordin Beach, another trail we followed.  People kayak or canoe (I always forget the difference) in a distance.

While I surveyed the area, Craig was busy tracing a surprise for me on the sand.  Love you too, babe.

Hold on, did it take?

I don't know, didn't hear or see anything.

Ok, let's try again.

That's better.

After seeing most of the island, Craig and I happened upon my mom feasting on durian and rambutan.

The island reminded my mom of her home province in the Philippines.

The vendor told us to try a durian.  Before anything else though, we ordered a coconut as a chaser.

I can't even describe the unbelievably disgusting taste of durians, reaffirming my conviction that the fruit does taste like onion and garlic.

Craig needed the coconut.

Waiting for the ferry to take us back home.

A mother and her brood actually cut in front of us and took our seats, forcing us to wait for the next ferry.  I was close to throwing her overboard.

Aye aye Captain Steinbeck!

A breath-taking stretch of a coconut-lined road.
