Craig decided not to wait until summer break for his Singapore visit, but changed his plans for winter break 2001 instead. Singapore is a world renowned food haven, which Craig discovered early in his visit. Hawker stalls are local vendors selling local food. However, beware where you go for some hawker stalls offer better food than others. Here is Lau Pa Sat, the oldest hawker stall in Singapore and still boasting the best satay. |
Satay is not satay until it is tasted at Lau Pa Sat amidst a colonial Singapore atmosphere. Papa and Craig enjoy beef satay under the stars. |
Meanwhile, Mama and my verdict stands . . . mutton satay beats chicken and beef. |
Craig tries another Singapore dessert delight, ice kachang (ice and beans). Shaved, colored ice is sweetened with jelly and beans. |
Down party central, Boat Quay (although Singapore has several party centrals). This photo taken at night does not exactly do Boat Quay good, but we're too embarrassed to go further down while taking pictures like the average tourist. |
In our quest to find East Coast Park and having lost our way, we stumbled on Fisherman's Village @ Pasir Ris Park. The beach was littered with plastic straws and other indistinguishable objects. We tried to sunbathe, but ants were getting into our suits. |
All set to go to Jurong Bird Park. The hot sun forced me to strip to sarongs. Having only two seasons, dry or wet, people in Singapore enjoy year-long summer. Not being a fan of winter, I however would like to feel a bit of the coolness of fall. |
Craig keeps the regal pink flamingoes company @ the bird park. We saw many birds that day, but we can never forget seeing the ducks feeding the fish. |
These pheasant-looking birds saw Craig as lunch and went pecking after him. |
Craig poses in front of the only Night Safari in the world. I love Singapore's open-zoo concept and there are no cages in their zoos. @ the Night Safari tram ride, we had animals come up to the vehicle, and sometimes, the only boundary between us is water.

We were especially lucky to see animal upon animal fight. A bear falls on another. Otters bickered. Good thing that the bats we came upon were content with eating fruit. Mama waits for us to finish exploring the trails. |
Craig, my mom, and I went off to Pulau Ubin for cycling and more exploring. |
