Picnic in
May
On the 29th of May 2001, a group of friends set out to achieve the unimaginable – a picnic by the freezing Lake Michigan after a week of winter in the summer. |
A game of touch football was initiated to keep spirits up. This developed into regular football later when the girls left. |
Hardly the only ones attempting this daredevil event, families dotted the lakeshore line, in tents and cooking mouth-watering barbeque.
Anh rides her gallant steed, Tom, through the waves. |
<L2R>Jane, Pam, Ling, Anh, and Chi captured in an all-girl moment. |
The lone guys not playing “regular” football, Tuan and Tom decided to accompany the girls on their walk to the dock that wasn’t. (Behind the guys. It was just thin wall of aluminum). |
Merwoman Anh and merman Tom drift to shore, enticed by the wonderful aroma of barbeque cooking . . . that and to collect seashells for Tom’s hair. |
2 girls, a guy, and a piece of beach -- Chi with one leg prominently up, Pam, and of course, macho Tuan. |
Another impossible feat – Craig and Jane try to cram a whole slice of watermelon into their mouths all @ once. Jane swallows a few seeds and bites her tongue in the process. |
Tedalo
tests the air, Thanh gathers the equipment, Allan scans the view, and
Tom’s friend checks the ground as they prep themselves up for another
mentally grueling game of Frisbee. |
Dog pile! Allan, Jane, Craig, Pam, Tom, and Anh demonstrate what close friendship is all about. |
Following their example, the rest of the gang join the ride, especially Nick and Chi who took a break from barbequing chicken. |
An Asian ‘Mary’ and a white American 'Joseph' search all of Lakeshore for shelter for the baby and found our picnic area. Their car broke down. |

Just a picture I would like to throw in here. Matt D. came to visit Chicago a week before our final exams and when the weather turned chilly. Showed him downtown Chicago, hung out with the group, especially the guys on the first floor, tried getting into a 21+ jazz club, saw a modern opera by Philip Glass, and absorbed the music of Hot House. Almost missed his plane the next day. J It was great to see a good friend from Singapore. |
